CFTC event to address accountability and transparency in public sector finance systems.

Addressing accountability and transparency in public sector finance systems is the focus of a five-day seminar sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation.

Organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat between 9 and 13 October 2006 in London, the event aims to expose senior internal auditors to international best practice so as to enhance capacity in the management of public finance. Participants from 19 member countries are attending the event.

“Internal audit has not received the prime attention it deserves in strengthening internal control in most member countries,” Richard Gold, Interim Director of the Secretariat’s Governance and Institutional Development Division, said.

“This seminar is one among several planned activities that not only sounds the alarm bell on weak internal control systems, but which also targets the building of capacity across the Commonwealth in a sustainable manner,” he added.

The training package has been developed under the Secretariat’s Public Expenditure Management Programme as part of the Secretariat’s mandate to help improve skills in member countries.

“The seminar will focus on areas such as internal audit standards, computer audit and development of internal audit manual,” said Kaifala Marah, Adviser, Public Expenditure Management.
