9 February 2009
The Commonwealth Day 2009 was celebrated at the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Asia Centre, India on February 9 with much fervor and enthusiasm.
Highlighting the importance of youth, Mr. Sharma reminded that in the diamond anniversary year of the Commonwealth, the CYP is committed to looking ahead to serve a new young generation. He also mentioned that as a champion of democracy, development and diversity, the Commonwealth has a powerful story to tell. It is bonded together as a community both of Governments and of Peoples.
The chief-guest of the occasion, Mr. P.S. Sahai in his address said that the real ‘common’ wealth shared by all the member countries is the young population of these member nations. He also said, “I am young not because of my age but in spirit. In fact, I urge the organization to change its definition of youth by increasing the upper age limit from twenty-nine to thirty-five.” He added, “I am especially fascinated by programmes like ‘Respect and Understanding’ and Bonding beyond Boundaries through Sports which aim to uplift the status of the rural poor youth.” He said that the values of respect apply universally to everyone irrespective of the age, caste, or colour. He also hoped the organization lives up to its fine reputation in days to come.
A friendly Volleyball match between the Centre employees and the Punjab Engineering College (PEC) students was also played after the celebrations. The gathering included Commonwealth Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living, AISEC members and PEC students. The Major celebrations this year are being held in Brunei Darussalam this year. This will include exchange of cultural programmes by sixty-five young participants across Asia region. The event gives young people a platform to show case their talent and learn rich culture of Asia.
