Commonwealth Day Celebrations 2008

The CYP Asia celebrated the Commonwealth Day 10 March 08 in its campus at 03.00 PM.

The Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Centre, located in Sector-12, Chandigarh celebrated the Commonwealth Day today in its campus at 03.00 PM. As part of the celebrations Mr. Chris Luswata, the Head of Finance from Commonwealth Secretariat- London unfurled the Commonwealth Flag, He also read out the message from Elizabeth R Her Majesty the Queen, Head of the Commonwealth.

This year's theme is "The Environment our Future". In her message she stated that "The example of Nile River illustrates many of the challenges facing the global environment as a whole which, belatedly, we have come to understand cannot alone sustain our lives as once it did. The competition for the fresh water by the growing population in itself is becoming a potential source of conflict. Our own attitudes to the environment and the use we put into, may have conscious for the people on every continent, every ocean and sea."

A spectacular skit by the youth ambassadors for Positive Living from Punjab Engineering College spreading awareness on HIV, Drugs and substance abuse. The message from the skit was clear stating that in order to prevent this deadly virus one should (i) self- control (ii) discard used syringes, instead use only medicated disposable needles and (iii) use condoms for safe sex. We shouldn't neglect HIV positive people rather they should be extended full love, respect and take them along the family/community.

The Chief Guest also read out the Honorable Secretary - General Commonwealth Secretariat message for this auspicious day. Mr. Luswata also thanked the august gathering for gracing the occasion. He also appreciated the message on HIV/AIDS prevention by the young volunteers. Mr. Anil Gupta, on behalf of the Regional Director, welcomed the Chief Guest, invited guests, performers and CYP staff for their valuable time, support and contributions. The celebrations ended with a friendly volleyball match between the CYP Asia Centre staff members.
