International Youth Day will be a highlight in the calendar across the Commonwealth Pacific region
10 August 2007
The members of the Commonwealth Pacific are gearing up for an active International Youth Day in keeping with the United Nations’ theme of 'be seen, be heard: youth participation for development'
A number of the 14 Commonwealth countries in the Pacific region have formulated well developed plans for the celebrations on 12 August 2007.
In Samoa, International Youth Day 2007 coincides with Fathers Day, a national holiday. To celebrate this coincidence, the government will be launching its Fathers and Sons Programme. Much like the Mothers and Daughters programme run by the Division for Women, the Fathers and Sons programme will provide a forum where participants can talk about reproductive health. Given the taboo nature of the topic, the forum aims to be a neutral space in which candid discussions can be shared.
For the second time in its 44 year history, the South Pacific Games are due to be held in Samoa. Every four years the Pacific comes together in friendship to celebrate this multi-sport event. Some 4,000 participants, most of them young people, will come from 22 Pacific Island nations and Territories to compete in 32 sporting events. The Games begin a fortnight after International Youth Day and will run for two weeks.
Funding permitting, the Niue Youth Council executive committee plans to celebrate International Youth Day with a fashion show and public speaking display to promote the Niuean language. The fashion show will promote the use of cultural and local materials designed by young people. The presentation of the fashions will be divided into three categories; traditional and cultural wear, era of the Pareu or floral garments, and evening and formal wear. In addition to the fashion show, the national speech presentation has also been planned and will be recorded for Niue youth radio and will be presented by three students of Niue High School.
Vanuatu is celebrating International Youth Day for the second time. This year the celebrations will involve NGO Youth Organisations, the Ministry and Department of Youth and Sport, and faith based organisations. Among the activities planned for the day are a TV panel discussion on youth issues, a church service officiated by young people and public notice boards on which young people are invited to leave messages of hope.
Planning meetings for the celebrations in Vanuatu allowed stakeholders to discuss the re-establishment of the Vanuatu National Youth Council, a body CYP strongly supports.
