CYP Asia Centre hosts a five-day capacity and leadership development workshop for Regional Youth Caucus representatives from Commonwealth Asia countries
Regional Youth Caucus representatives from the Commonwealth Asia countries; Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Singapore and Sri Lanka along with senior officials from the National Youth Councils of these countries have got together in India to learn, share and network, with the ultimate objective of meeting the challenges faced by young people in the region.
A five-day capacity and leadership development workshop for these young men and women are underway at the CYP Asia Centre in Chandigarh from July 23. At the inaugural function of the workshop, Mr. Rajan Kashyap, Chief Information Commission of the Punjab (India) stressing the importance of leadership stated that there are no short-cuts to success, it can only come through effective leadership and sincere efforts.
The objective of the workshop is to develop the capacity of these young women and men and to instil in them qualities of leadership which will enable them to discharge the roles expected of them. By bringing together young people and youth functionaries of the National Youth Councils and/or similar structures, the workshop aims at developing a bond between them so that both work towards the common objective of youth empowerment, with the officials working as mentors to these young people.
“At the Commonwealth Youth Programme, we walk our talk and, therefore, ensure the involvement of young people in the entire governance structure making them equal partners in decision-making and development thereby underlining the criticality of engaging young people in their empowerment process” says Mr. Raj K. Mishra, Regional Director, CYP Asia Centre.
This is a participatory and interactive workshop comprising of discussions, experience sharing sessions, presentations and interactions with eminent resource persons in the leadership development field, planning and communication etc. As part of the workshop the participants will be visiting youth development centres and rural ICT development centres of the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, an autonomous rural youth development body of the government of India, to learn about rural youth development projects of India.
The Asia Regional Youth Caucus Chairperson, Ms. Nosheen Abbas from Pakistan while expressing her excitement of being physically present at the CYP Asia Regional Centre urged her fellow RYC members to always remember, while discharging their responsibilities the 3Cs; collaboration, communication and co-operation.
The young representatives in consultation with the government officials will be preparing action plans for implementation in their respective countries; addressing challenges and emerging concerns of young people such as HIV, drugs/substance abuse, youth in conflict with law, education and employment amongst others.
