Brunei Darussalam has taken the opportunity to work with CYP to enhance the capacity of youth workers and promote youth development in the country
“The Diploma in Youth Development Work fulfills His Majesty’s Government’s commitment in the implementation of the Commonwealth Plan of Action for Youth Empowerment (PAYE) that was agreed at the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting in the Bahamas last year. This is also in line with the national development plan towards strengthening human resource development in the country” said the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Hon. Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dawa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Awang Mohammad bin Haji Daud at the opening ceremony held at the Chancellor’s Hall on 18th June 2007.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) has appointed Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) as the main institution to deliver the CYP Diploma to the first intake of youth workers in the country. In this regard, this is a collaborative effort of three organisations; UBD, the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports (MCYP) and CYP as well as partnerships with various youth worker employers. This is a two year programme and participants will be conferred Pan-Commonwealth Award upon completion of the 19 modules. The curriculum of this programme is rooted in the values and principles of the Commonwealth. The programme will also incorporate basic requirements of tertiary education in Brunei Darussalam.
The programme will equip the participants with knowledge, attitudes, attributes and competencies in working with young people in a variety of settings, in managing and supporting other paid and volunteer workers and in formulating policies in governmental and non-governmental agencies. It will also prepare the participants to empower young people to play an active role in the regeneration of their fellow youth to become effective partners in development.
The Vice Chancellor of UBD, Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Ismail bin Duraman said “The lecturers take on a facilitative role in working alongside groups of students to explore ideas and theories, linking them with local contexts. The students will be engaged in an interesting and meaningful educational process through employing the interactive and experimental learning methods.”
To launch the Diploma in Brunei, CYP staff members Cristal de Saldanha and Saraswathy Rajagopal, UBD lecturer Dr. Susi Ibrahim and lecturers from Universiti Putra Malaysia Dr. Shamsuddin Ahmad and Dr. Jamila Othman assisted in teaching and moderating Module 3 (Principles and Practice of Youth Work) and Module 10 (Conflict Resolution Strategies and Skills).
In closing his speech, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports said “I believe strongly that this professional qualification will contribute to and enhance our effort to develop responsible and resilient youth in our country”
The CYP Diploma is delivered in partnership with 28 Universities to youth workers in 44 countries of the Commonwealth.
