Pre-Launch Meeting of the Diploma in ‘Youth Development Work’ in Brunei Darussalam

CYP would like to acknowledge the generosity of the Government of Brunei Darussalam especially the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports

CYP would like to acknowledge the generosity of the Government of Brunei Darussalam especially the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports which at very short notice agreed to host the forthcoming 8th Diploma Review Meeting involving Partner Institutions and Government Officials from the Asian Commonwealth countries. In response to the request made by the Government of Brunei, the Commonwealth Secretariat has initiated preparations to deliver the Diploma in Youth Work in Brunei Darussalam.

In conjunction with these efforts, Ms. Cristal de Saldanha Stainbank, of the CYP Pan-Commonwealth office and Ms. Saraswathy Rajagopal of the CYP Asia Centre met the Vice –Chancellor Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Ismail Bin Duraman, Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor, Haji Dr. Junaidi Rahman and teaching faculty of the Universiti of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on 24th May 2007 at his office to discuss the pre launching and delivery arrangements. The VC welcomed the Commonwealth delegates and expressed his university’s contribution and commitment and gave his blessing to the successful implementation of the course. He further stated that young people of Brunei wish to receive a value added programme such as the CYP – Diploma programme.

The VC assured fullest support and cooperation to the CYP delegates in the collaborative efforts and said that “….my University will ensure the highest quality and delivery of the Diploma in a professional manner’. He further added that UBD would also focus on the sustainability aspects of the Diploma.

To begin with, two modules relating to the Diploma, namely Principles and Practice of Youth Development Work and Conflict Resolution Strategies and Skills have been planned for June 2007. This programme will be delivered on a tripartite basis comprising of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, UBD and the CYP. It is expected that the programme would give a new dimension to youth work as a profession in Brunei Darussalam. It is also hoped that the programme will provide additional skills and competencies to youth workers and thereby enhance their contribution to national development.

Later, CYP delegates met the Dean Dr. Azman Ahmad, the Coordinators Dr. Diana Cheong, Dr. Susi Ibrahim, Emil Zahrin and the teaching faculty of the UBD to discuss the delivery, accreditation, assessment mechanisms and related issues for the successful implementation of the Diploma programme.

CYP delegates thanked the VC, Coordinators and Teaching Faculty of the UBD for showing a keen interest in implementing the Diploma programme in Brunei Darussalam and assured fullest technical support to the University as well as the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Government of Brunei Darussalam.
