Ohangwena Youth Cultural Group awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Silver Award

Ohangwena gets the Silver!!

 

Ohangwena Regional Youth Cultural Group of Namibia were awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Youth Development Silver Award at a colourfulceremony held at Protea Hotel in Ondangwa district which is about 700 Km from the capital Windhoek. CYP Africa Regional Director, Mrs. Valencia Mogegeh and Hon. Clemens Kashuupulwa, Governor of Oshana Region, Namibia made the presentation of the award.

 

Preceding the award presentation was a short play by the award recipients which depicted the plight of children in the region leaving with foster parents.

 

"Your presence here this evening signifies the success of the implementation of the Commonwealth Youth Programme in Namibia. It is equally a manifestation of the obligation of the government of the Republic of Namibia and the key role of the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture plays in our regional duties to create job opportunities for our youth," Hon. Clemens Kashupuulwa said.

 

John Shikuloh, founder of Ohangwena youth group shared some of the areas of focus for their group which included HIV and AIDS prevention, education, domestic violence, rape and alcohol abuse. He highlighted polygamy as the major cause of domestic violence in the region. The group addresses these social challenges by education through cultural performances such as art and drama. "We plan to establish an after school programme for orphans," Mr. Shikuloh added.

 

Also in attendance were the CYCI Review Meeting delegates from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia and Uganda as well facilitators from Kenya and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
