Ndi Mercy of Cameroon talks to the CYP

"The CYP is increasingly understood in my country thanks to thelobbying and advocacy that Emmanuel Sanyi, Cameroon Regional Youth Caucus member and I have put forward. The Ministry of Youth Affairs is slowly but surely understanding the processes involved," says Ndi Mercy, a youth from Cameroon.

Mercy was recently in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as part of the international observer team for elections in that country. She excitedly sharesthat it was a great experience for her. She feels she has learnt a lot about the monitoring process lessons relevant to her country.

"I want to commend efforts of the Commonwealth to help Cameroon create an Independent Electoral Commission. It is very essential" she said.

Mercy noted that currently Youth Participation was visible in Cameroon. She is among theyoung Cameroonians called up to be part of the process of elaborating a National Youth Policy. The first meeting was held last month and the next onecomes up 28th August, 2006. A final document is expected to be produced in the next few months. "I am representing the Commonwealth Youth Programme in this process as the 1st Deputy Commonwealth Youth Representative, for Cameroon."

In October, she is scheduled to be in Uganda for a British Council programme: The Pan African Leadership Programme. "The need to have leaders for the development of Africa is paramount. This is why this forum is essential - to equip young people as well as adults with leadership skills" she quips.

Mercy, who also coordinates the activities of an NGO, added that they were about to launch the second edition of their magazine which advocates for Peace. As the youth spokesperson for HIV/AIDS, she was on a sensitization campaign with a group of peer educators during a national convention of young people.
