The month of March has been a busy one for all of us with the celebrations of the Commonwealth Day and the hosting of the Commonwealth Forum on Youth Parliament.
In the midst of all the activities that took place, the Commonwealth Youth Programme Regional Centre for Africa (CYP RCA) welcomed the Africa Regional Youth Caucus (RYC) coordinator, Mr Batsho Nthoi, who came to
The coordinator was exposed to the work of the CYP RCA; best experiences on programme delivery were shared by programme staff.
Mr Nthoi expressed the need for capacity building amongst the members of the Regional Youth Caucus to assist them in effectively carrying out their responsibilities, he further stated that the roles of the RYCs should be clearly defined and strategies be put in place to ensure facilitation of the RYC in carrying out their responsibilities, mainly supporting the work of CYP in achieving the objectives expressed by the Strategic Areas articulated by CYMM.
The final meeting with the coordinator engaged the Regional Director, Mrs Valencia Mogegeh, the Programme Managers for Youth Work Education and Training, Mr James Odit and Youth Networks and Governance, Ms Nellie Munala, the Information and Programme Support Officer, Mr Martin Matabishi and CYP RCA intern, Ms Elizabeth Tlali - RYC focal point.
The meeting agreed that the concept of the RYCs need to be communicated with the member governments and the RYCs. It was agreed that new RYC members should meet with former office holders to ensure proper hand-over and continuity of RYC activities. "There is need to explore how the RYC members could be offered support at a national level" stressed the coordinator.
Mr Nthoi expressed the need for the recognition of the RYC at country level and to facilitate this process it was agreed that CYP RCA would assist RYC with the development of brochures and the possibility of promotional material such as pocket diaries would be explored.
The meeting ended on a successful note as the Regional Director and CYP RCA programme staff together, saw the birth of new prospects and the rising of the RYC as an effective factor in youth participation in the delivery of CYP programmes youth empowerment and national development.
