CYMM will discuss emerging issues of youth development, specifically linkages between peace-building, social development and transformation
The Seventh Meeting of Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting (7CYMM) will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 27 – 30 April 2008 under the theme of ‘Youth and Peace-Building’. The meeting will be officially opened on Sunday 27 April 2008 by the President of Sri Lanka, HE Mr Mahinda Rajapaska. Mr Kamalesh Sharma will also speak at his first ministerial meeting since his appointment as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth on 2 April.
The meeting will discuss emerging issues of youth development, specifically linkages between peace-building, social development and transformation. It will also provide policy directions for the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Commonwealth’s other youth work for the next four years.
To set the context for the 7 CYMM, Pregs Govender, a feminist activist and author of Love and Courage, A Story of Insubordination will present on the CYMM 2008 theme on 28 April, the first day of the meeting. Ameerah Haq, the Humanitarian Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General will deliver the lead strategic presentation on the broad framework of youth and peace-building.
CYMM will see a number of presentations from around the Commonwealth including a case study from Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Pacific and the Northern Uganda Youth Development Centre. These regional case studies outline experiences of peace-building and provide an overview of how conflicts have developed and affected societies as well as how they have been managed, making special reference to the role of young people.
Youth representatives from the Commonwealth will also take part in the 7CYMM and other meetings including meetings of the Pan-Commonwealth Youth Caucus and Pan-Commonwealth Regional Advisory Board on 24 April. A skills building workshop on gender and youth dimension in peace-building will take place from 25-26 April; and a stakeholders’ meeting is also scheduled on 27 April.
These meetings will comprise of ministers, senior government officials and youth representatives of the Commonwealth. Several Commonwealth countries are yet to confirm their participation at CYMM therefore CYP is respectfully urging countries to look beyond their resource challenges and visualize the several opportunities for capacity support, networking and forging of strategic partnerships.
