Commonwealth Observers
7 January 2008
As young members and future leaders of the Commonwealth, we are saddened by the surge of violence and destruction emanating from the hosting of Presidential elections in Kenya
While we do not take a position on the electoral process, we believe that the fallout of the latest poll in the death and destruction of life and property does not augur well for the people of Kenya.
Over the last few years Kenya has demonstrated remarkable stability despite changes in its political system and crises in neighbouring countries. We call for this resilience in its people to emerge once more and for stability to be seen again.
We urge our leaders of the Commonwealth to remember that their actions in times of both peace and hardship has a positive or negative impact on the youth of their respective countries and the Commonwealth as a whole. We encourage them therefore to seek interventions which are peaceful and supportive of the society which respects differences of opinion and positions but more importantly demonstrates these differences with peace and understanding.
We therefore ask that all sides in this conflict desist from further bloodshed and to allow peaceful discussions to prevail.
