CYP Caribbean Centre unveils ‘Building the Future Today’

The Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Caribbean Centre has launched a collection of statements, speeches and papers by its regional director to boost youth empowerment.

The publication, titled 'Building the Future Today', was issued by Henry Charles on 6 November 2006. It is designed for intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations working in the field of youth development and affairs.

Mr Charles has put the spotlight on vulnerable young people such as the victims of economic marginalisation and social exclusion. He suggests approaches based on human rights to help those who have been condemned to a cycle of persistent poverty.

"Existing systems and programmes should be repositioned and redefined to adequately meet the needs of young people to avoid their alienation in society," he said.

“We need to work with them on issues such as human rights so that they will understand that a rights-based approach is an integral part of sustainable development.”

Mr Charles, 48, took office at the CYP Caribbean Centre, based in Georgetown, Guyana, in September 2005 following a career in youth work, trade unionism and social development in his native St Lucia.
