‘A Perfect Indian Wedding’
The 19th Commonwealth Games opened in spectacular style last night (Sunday) as almost 60,000 people packed into the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to watch the ceremony in India’s capital New Delhi. In what commentators described as ‘a perfect Indian wedding’, teams from the 71 participating nations were lauded by the cheering crowds in a display of lights, colour and fireworks.
The opening ceremony was attended by Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma and Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba.
Today, Commonwealth Sports Ministers meet as the first official day of competition begins. Mr Sharma will stress that the benefits of sport should reach beyond the elite competition, and bring its rewards to all.
The focus of today’s meeting will be on sport for development and peace and how sport and physical activity can contribute to realising key development goals.
Sports bring so many different cultures together.....maybe some day it will dawn on us that we are all one world, breathing the same air and the borders are actually riduculous and actually become one...
Nice Game On India...........
