2010 Soccer World Cup in focus at Africa investment forum

9 October 2006

Commonwealth Business Council event to discuss challenges and opportunities of football’s greatest show.

More than 400 delegates will convene in Johannesburg, South Africa to highlight the importance of African capital and the challenges and opportunities that will emerge from the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Organised by the Commonwealth Business Council from 9 to 11 October 2006, participants at the fifth Africa Investment Forum will look at how South Africa and the continent can benefit from the investment generated for football’s greatest show.

Speakers expected at the forum include South African ministers Mandisi Mpahlwa and Makhenekesi Stofile and New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Secretariat’s Chief Executive Firmino Mucavele.

They are expected to debate how business leaders view progress made by the G8 and the African Union in tapping foreign direct investment to Africa. The forum will also focus on creating opportunities for joint public-private sector partnerships in information and communication technology and transportation, agro-industries and tourism, among others fields.

The Commonwealth Business Council was established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in October 1997 to involve the private sector in the promotion of trade and investment.
