Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma applauds the rescue efforts underway

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has expressed his sincere condolences to the Government and people of Papua New Guinea following the sinking of the MV Rabaul Queen.

“The Commonwealth deeply regrets the injury and loss of life occasioned by this tragedy,” said the Secretary-General.

He applauded the rescue efforts underway, with the assistance of Australian authorities and local volunteers, which are reported to have saved a large number of passengers.

The inevitable loss of the lives of other victims is to be mourned, he said.

“We will keep the people of Papua New Guinea in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, as the rescue efforts continue.”
