II. “Putting Gender Back In The Picture: Rethinking Women’s Economic Empowerment”
By Emily Esplen with Alyson Brody; BRIDGE (development - gender), Institute of Development Studies University of Sussex, December 2007.
The Report has been prepared at the request of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). It has focused on the relationship between ffinancial gain and women’s empowerment in details. Report starts with the credit availability and women entrepreneurship and moved towards faminisation of labour during the time of liberalisation. In this context, report has highlighted the issues of mobility constraints of women, gender pay gap, exploitation due to casualisation of labour thorough different forms of contract and recognition of women labour at the workplace. The issue has been placed against the ‘double burden’ faced by women in the form of paid work and care work. The report has made an attempt to understand the nuances of gendered barriers that prevent some women from benefiting from economic opportunities or from being empowered despite access to various opportunities.
