The morning began with a summing up of Tuesday’s work by Anne-Marie Kirton from the Barbados team.

II. Marketing Taster

At this point participants divided into teams to brainstorm a new product and marketing strategy. The four groups then made presentations about their products which were:

  • A Caribbean marinade
  • A pepper sauce developed from a cottage industry
  • Island coconut oil
  • Essence of Helen, a beauty product

Learning outcomes

  • Get an overview of the market and marketing issues
  • Get a taste of designing and marketing a product

III. Gender and Agricultural Trade Liberalisation

Flavia Cherry presented a case study of the ‘Get up, Stand up’ initiative in St Lucia and the resistance organised to Economic Partnership Agreements.

Dorienne Rowan Campbell spoke from the perspective of a small farmer, including the issues of organic certification and market access.

Mariama Williams gave a presentation about agriculture issues and the WTO context for agriculture.

IV. Monitoring progress. Gender and Trade Indicators for the Caribbean

Cecilia Babb of CAFRA explained the gender analysis framework which participants were asked to apply:

  • Access to and control of material and non-material resources
  • Definitions of work (paid and unpaid)
  • Value of women’s bodies
  • Participation in decision making and public structures.
