A Call to Action: Accountability to Women in All Aspects of Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding and Recovery by the Executive Director UNIFEM

Occasion: International Colloquium on Women's Empowerment, Leadership, Security, Monrovia, Liberia I am honoured to be here today, together with so many champions of women's rights in conflict. I know you will all have good ideas about how to accelerate the implementation of Security Council resolutions 1325 and 1820. My remarks today will therefore be brief.

We need greater accountability for implementing resolutions 1325 and 1820. These resolutions will remain words on paper without stronger efforts to implement them, and this will not happen until decision makers are held accountable for implementation.

 

To be sure, there have been some important advances. Some war criminals have been indicted for sexual violence and some have been sentenced. Some post-conflict transitional justice measures have enabled women to be heard. Liberia has established a special "Criminal Court E" to try rape and other gender-based violence crimes and, on 8 March this year, will launch its National Action plan on UN resolution 1325, the first post-conflict country to do so.
