Small States Digest Issue 3 2011

Welcome to the third issue of the Small States Digest, a periodic information sharing newsletter from the Commonwealth Secretariat, focusing on the needs and interests of small states.

In this issue, the digest carries three main articles namely: “Managing Urbanisation in Small States” by Cliff Hague; “Private Sector Role in Natural Resources Development: Enabling framework for private sector investment in extractive natural resources in a developing small state” by Victor Kitange and Wonderful Hope Khonje; and “Aid for Trade in Small and Vulnerable Economies” by Mohammad A. Razzaque.

Cliff Hague’s article looks at the significance of the growth of urbanisation in small states and suggests options for managing this growth in these countries. The article by Victor Kitange and Wonderful Khonje is a digest of key components of a private sector investment framework for extractive natural resources in a developing small state, with particular focus on foreign direct investment. Finally, Mohammad Razzaque’s article focuses on Aid for Trade flows to Small and Vulnerable Economies (SVE’s) and sheds some light on their effectiveness.

As usual, the digest also contains selected economic indicators, a listing of recent publications on small states and an up-coming events section.
