Good Governance and Gender Equality in the Public Sector in Commonwealth Africa

Report of a Regional Workshop, 27-30 June 2005, Lilongwe, Malawi

Malawi ReportThe centrality of good governance and gender equality in the attainment of sustainable socio-economic and political development has been the focus of development debate globally. The symbiosis between good governance and gender equality requires that both issues be tackled simultaneously.

Most African countries have ratified global and regional protocols that aim to increase gender equality in all spheres to ensure that women, men, girls and boys participate in and benefit equitably from development processes. However, despite these ratifications and existing efforts to achieve gender equality, effective participation of women in governance structures and processes as well as gender equity in governance outcomes are still limited in the majority of African countries.
