The Commonwealth Consultative Group on Environment (CCGE) is the principal forum for debate on environmental issues of concern to member states. It enables ministers and senior officials to share experiences in the context of current international processes on environment and sustainable development, convening annually in conjunction with the UNEP Governing Council or the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.
CCGE's strength is that it provides an opportunity for ministers to meet outside of formal negotiations and beyond their usual economic or regional groupings. This helps senior policy members to explore concerns of mutual interest, deepening their understanding of issues being negotiated, and to look at different policy approaches, share experiences and identify areas where mutual assistance may be developed.
The last Commonwealth Consultative Group on Environment was held on 18 February 2013, at the UN Headquarters at Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya. Its main agenda item was a discussion of energy and environment in sustainable development goals (SDGs), exploring lessons learned from Commonwealth approaches to the seventh millennium development goal (MDG) of ensuring environmental sustainability.
