HE Mr Marcus Stephen, President
His Excellency Mr Marcus Stephen was re-elected as President of Nauru in November 2010 after his first re-election in April 2008. He first took office as president in December 2007.
Mr Stephen is concurrently Minister for Home Affairs; Minister for Police, Prisons and Emergency Services; and Minister for Public Service. He had earlier been appointed as Minister for Nauru Fisheries and Marine Resources; Information and Communications Technologies; and Sports in November 2007 before becoming president.
From June to August 2004, Mr Stephen served in various capacities, including as Minister for Economic Development and Industry. He also oversaw the Nauru Fisheries and Marine Resources Authority.
Mr Stephen was first elected to Parliament in 2003 and served as Education and Finance Minister from 2003 to 2004.
From 2001 to 2003, Mr Stephen served as Chairperson and General Manager of the Bank of Nauru.
He is Chairperson of the Pacific Small Island Developing States.
Mr Stephen is a former weightlifter, and winner of seven gold medals (1990, 1994 and 1998) and five silver medals (1990 and 2002) at the Commonwealth Games.
He is President of the Oceania Weightlifting Federation and the Nauru National Olympic Committee.
