The Hon Derek Sikua, Prime Minister

The Hon Dr David Derek SikuaThe Hon Dr David Derek Sikua took office as Prime Minister of Solomon Islands on 20 December 2007.

He became a member of the Opposition Liberal Party in November 2007.

Dr Sikua had previously served as Minister of Education and Human Resources Development in the cabinet of his predecessor Mr Manasseh Sogavare from May 2006 to 10 November 2007.

Dr Sikua was elected to the National Parliament in April 2006. From 2003 to 2005, he was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. He had earlier held the post of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Conservation from 1997 to 1998.

Dr Sikua was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development from 1994 to 1997, after serving as Under-Secretary from 1993. Prior to this he was a senior official in the Ministry after having worked for a brief period as a teacher.

Dr Sikua has a Doctorate in Education from the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand, and a Master’s degree in Education from Monash University, Victoria, Australia. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, and a Diploma in Education from the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji Islands.

Dr Sikua was born on 10 September 1959 in Ngalitavethi Village, Guadacanal Province.
