The Hon Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister

The Hon Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam became Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius on 5 July 2005. He also holds the portfolios of Minister of Defence and Home Affairs, Minister of Civil Service and Administrative Reforms, and Minister of Rodrigues and Outer Islands.

Dr Ramgoolam of the Mauritius Labour Party (MLP), was a former Leader of the Opposition from October 2000 to 4 July 2005.

He had earlier served as prime minister from December 1995 to September 2000. From 1991 to1995, he was Leader of the Opposition.

Dr Ramgoolam has headed the MLP since February 1991. He was President of the MLP from June 1991 to July 1992.

Before entering politics, Dr Ramgoolam was a medical doctor. He worked as a general practitioner in Mauritius from 1985 to 1987 and as a resident medical doctor at The Yorkshire Clinic in West Yorkshire, UK, from 1982 to 1985.

Dr Ramgoolam was a senior medical doctor in Mauritius from 1981 to 1982, and a clinical assistant in cardiology at the University College Hospital in London from 1977 to 1980.

From 1976 to 1977, Dr Ramgoolam worked as a resident medical doctor at the Dr A G Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis, Mauritius. Prior to this, he was an intern at St Laurence’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland.

Dr Ramgoolam has a Bachelor of Laws degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He later completed a vocation course at the Inns of Court School of Law in 1993 and was called to the Bar at Inner Temple, UK, that year. He holds a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of England, and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.

Dr Ramgoolam was born on 14 July 1947.
