Sport and the Commonwealth

Sport is a key part of the Commonwealth’s identity. Commonwealth Heads of Government have recognised the benefits of physical activity and the importance of sport as an effective instrument for social and economic development.

Regular meetings of Commonwealth Ministers of Sport are now held to increase Commonwealth collaboration in this important area. The last meeting was held in Melbourne on 14 March 2006 where Ministers agreed to:

  • promote the health benefits of sport and physical activity
  • promote education through sport
  • use sport to develop leadership and participation in the community
  • build inclusive communities through sport

The Commonwealth Secretariat, through its Sports Adviser, is taking forward this work in collaboration with Ministers of Sport and the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport (CABOS).
