Conference on 'Citizenship and Human Rights Education'

Representatives from the Commonwealth Secretariats Education Section and Human Rights Unit were invited to attend the recent Conference on 'Citizenship and Human Rights Education' in Yaoundé, Cameroon on 21 April 2004.

The keynote was delivered by Mr Hanif Vally, Head of the Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Secretariat, and a presentation was made by the Education Section on 'Citizenship Education in the Commonwealth'.

Presentations were also made on the subjects of "Rural Women and Land Ownership" and "Female Genital Mutilation in the Cameroon" by by Dr John Simo Mope and Mrs Comfort Effiom respectively.

Conference participants included representatives from some 200 governmental, NGO, youth and community organizations as well as the National Commission on Human Rights, many of whom were interested in Collaborative Partnerships .

The British Council, the Ministry of Science and Technology Research and the Commonwealth representative from the Ministry of External Affairs were also informed of the Collaborative Partners initiative  and  invited to maintain contact with the Education Section  with a view to providing a means of monitoring progress of the six action areas.
