Like many small developing states, Sierra Leone's social and economic development and survival depends largely on its ability to exploit and utilize its living and non - living natural resources effectively. Assistance of this nature is therefore particularly important to a country like Sierra Leone as it is recovering from internal conflict and is seeking to address its current political, economic and security challenges. The sea and its resources can be a significant source for sustaining a growing population, two thirds of which still live a subsistence way of life, and it can provide an alternative in terms of diversifying the economy from land- based resources.
The technical assistance provided by the Special Advisory Services Division will include the review of maritime zones legislation; hydrographic study of maritime areas under national jurisdiction; desktop study for the extended continental shelf; and support for negotiation of maritime boundaries with neighbouring countries.
