Ministerial Meetings

Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers Meetings (WAMMs) have been held triennially since 1985 and to date there have been 7WAMMs. The meetings have provided strategic opportunities for Ministers, Senior Officials, civil society organisations, and partner agencies to discuss critical issues in advancing women's empowerment and gender equality, and to contribute to Commonwealth and global agenda-setting processes.

Background on the 1-7 WAMMS

8WAMM will be held from 11-14 June 2007 in Uganda under the theme "Financing Gender Equality for Development and Democracy". This meeting is of particular significance as it is being held five months prior to the Meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) in the same host country, which offers potential for bring women's issues and gender equality to the attention of Heads of Government.

8WAMM Planning Meetings:

Prior to the 51st Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Gender Section is hosting the annual meeting of Commonwealth National Women's Machineries and the 2nd meeting of the Commonwealth Gender PoA Monitoring Group.

2nd Meeting of the Commonwealth Gender PoA Monitoring Group

The Commonwealth Gender PoA Monitoring Group (CGPMG) will hold its second meeting on 24 February 2007, 08:30 am - 14:00 pm, at the Helmsley Hotel in New York. The main aim will be to consider the draft Monitoring & Evaluation Framework for the Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality 2005-2015 (PoA) currently being developed by the Secretariat.

The M&E Framework will provide a powerful tool with gender-sensitive indicators to assist member countries assess progress on women's empowerment and gender equality. It will uniquely seek to harmonise existing M&E Frameworks for measuring gender equality such as the Gender-related Development Index (GDI), the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

8WAMM Preparatory Meeting of National Women's Machineries
The Commonwealth Heads of National Women's Machineries Meeting will provide an excellent forum for member countries, civil society organisations and partners to dialogue and plan in the lead up 8WAMM. It will also enable the Commonwealth, which forms the largest grouping of 53 countries within the UN system, to caucus on the eve of CSW.
