Commonwealth Heads of Government unanimously voted New Zealand Foreign and Trade Minister the Rt hon Don McKinnon MP as the fourth Commonwealth Secretary-General today. Mr Thabo Mbeki, President of South Africa, announced at the end of the first day of the meeting that the election was unanimous. He will take office in April 2000 when the current Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, completes his term of office.
