The Ninth Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting (9WAMM) will take place in Bridgetown, Barbados from 7-9 June 2010

The Meeting theme and agenda will seek to address measures for accelerating progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in relation to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality 2005-2015 (PoA).

The central message of 9WAMM is Recovery and Growth with Equity. The Gender Section takes a dynamic perspective on the principle of growth with equity. Given that growth is necessary but not sufficient for human development, the vision underpinning the Agenda is that post-crisis recovery can only be sustained when all parts of society contribute to, participate in, and benefit from growth. Hence, equitable growth contributes to gender equality and human development, and in, turn human development contributes to growth and to equity.

Also central to The Commonwealth Secretariat’s vision is the principle that growth is not only about economics but is three dimensional, taking in the critical elements of economic growth, social equity, and human development. In terms of the 9WAMM theme, recovery and economic growth are the desired outcomes, while equity and human development are the means to achieving this outcome.
