Definitions

Overseas Diplomatic Staff Member: A senior officer of the Commonwealth Secretariat (Pay points A - E) who has been accepted by Her Majesty’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office as being a citizen of a Commonwealth country, other than a person who is a citizen only of the United Kingdom and Colonies, and is permanently resident outside the United Kingdom.

Overseas Professional Staff Member: A staff member between Pay points F and I whose stay in the UK is contingent upon their employment with the Secretariat. Should such a staff member acquire or have, while employed in the Secretariat, been entitled to British nationality or residential status in the UK the staff member will cease, from the date of acquisition or entitlement, to be an overseas recruited staff member.

Spouse: A person recognized as a spouse under the laws of the country of which the staff member is a national. Allowances will be paid in respect of only one spouse. (Source: Staff Rule 69 d in the Human Resource Handbook.)

Dependent Child: An unmarried natural or legally adopted child of the staff member and who is under the age of 18 years or, a child under the age of 21 years in full time attendance at an educational institution….. Unless otherwise specified, no more than 3 children (as designated by the staff member) will be considered as “dependent” for the purposes of these rules.
