Ms Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, from Botswana, took office as Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General on 2 June 2008.
Ms Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba took office as Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General on 2 June 2008. She is responsible for Political Affairs, Human Rights, Youth Affairs, Human Resources and the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Divisions.
Prior to her appointment to the post, for the last 5 years of Masire-Mwamba’s career have been dedicated to investment promotion for Botswana, at the highest level in the region and internationally; this unique experience and exposure has provided her with a broad appreciation of key issues affecting business development and promotion across many economic sectors.
Under her leadership as Chief Executive Officer of Botswana’s Investment Promotion Agency (BEDIA ), the organization achieved consistent growth and facilitated key projects in the energy, manufacturing and services sectors. In the same period, BEDIA opened two offices, one in Johannesburg and the other in London, UK. BEDIA also organized, managed and hosted the first ever Global Business Exhibition. Masire-Mwamba’s interest and experience in economic development was nurtured throughout her previous experience in telecommunications development both in Botswana and in the UK. She holds a BSC in Electronics and Physics and an MBA, she has an extensive network of the business contacts throughout the SADC region and internationally.
Masire-Mwamba is the Chairman of the Brand Botswana Development team, the President of the Botswana Women in Business Association and Chairman of Botswana Tourism Board. She is a keen and active contributor to socio economic program’s through different boards and committees.
