BRIEF BACKGROUND:

The Commonwealth Health Professions Alliance (CHPA) is an alliance of Commonwealth health professional associations representing community health workers, dentists, doctors, nurses and pharmacists from Commonwealth countries. The CHPA have surveyed their members on the health MDGs with some interesting results. The aim of the debate is to address the theme for the 2010 CHMM and provide a mechanism for issues relevant to civil society to be raised with Commonwealth Health Ministers in a way that will engage their interest.

OBJECTIVES:

  • to address the theme of the CHMM from a civil society perspective;
  • to provide information and stimulate debate on the CHMM theme;
  • to raise awareness of civil society issues relevant to the CHMM theme with Commonwealth Health Ministers;
  • to provide a forum where representatives of Commonwealth health professional associations can interact with Commonwealth Health Ministers and their delegations; 
  • to develop a mechanism for civil society input at future CHMM; and 
  • to raise the profile of civil society with Commonwealth Health Ministers.

THEMES:

The topic for the debate is: The MDGs by 2015: possible or impossible for Commonwealth countries?

KEY SPEAKERS:

Dr Mark Collins (Commonwealth Foundation) will lead the ‘for’ team and Dr Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah (the Royal Commonwealth Society) will lead the ‘against’ team.
