The Sixth Meeting of Commonwealth Ministers Responsible for Women's Affairs (6WAMM) was successfully held from 17-19 April 2000 in New Delhi, India.
It was most appropriate that India an active proponent of the modern Commonwealth was the host country for 6WAMM - the first Commonwealth Meeting for the Millennium confirming that gender equality is recognised as one of the fundamental values of the modern Commonwealth and the global agenda. Forty-six member countries were represented.
The theme for 6WAMM was "Advancing the Commonwealth Agenda into the New Millennium".
The Meeting focused on advancing gender equality into the new Millennium as part of the overall framework for a people-centred development for the 54-nation Association. It was the first Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting to advance women's issues onto the agenda for the 21st century 'for women still lacking an equal voice'. The words of Mahatma Gandhi set the tone of the meeting: "But I am uncompromising in the matter of women's rights. In my opinion, she should labour under no legal disability not suffered by men. I should treat the daughters and sons on a footing of perfect equality."
The Meeting made an important statement on Commonwealth progress on the implementation of the 1995 Commonwealth Plan of Action on Gender and Development. The process represents the Commonwealth's invaluable contribution to the United Nations' Special Session of the General Assembly (Beijing Plus Five Conference) to be held in June 2000.
