New York Meetings 2006

The Commonwealth Meetings held on the eve of the 50th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) were as follows:

On the 25th February 2006, the First Meeting of Commonwealth Gender PoA Monitoring  Group took place.  Please see the background paper below.

 On the 26th February 20006, there was a Consultation of Women's Affairs Ministers which included:

  • A feature address by Ms. Rachel Mayanja, UN Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women on issues including "Opportunities and threats to the international gender equality agenda presented by current UN reforms";
  • The report of the first meeting of the Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action Monitoring Group, which will have met on 25 February, to discuss the proposed framework for monitoring PoA implementation and the development of Plan of Action indicators;
  • A planning session on the 8th Women's Affairs Ministers Meeting (8WAMM), which will be held in Uganda in 2007, prior to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which is also being held in Uganda later that year; and
  • A panel discussion on the theme of "Women in Decision-Making at all Levels", which was the theme selected by the majority of countries submitting suggestions to the Secretariat;

We were excited by the opportunity of continuing to strengthen partnerships between Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministries and international, Commonwealth, regional and bilateral agencies, and civil society organisations to promote the advancement of gender equality in Commonwealth member countries.
