The 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (18CCEM) was held from 28 to 31 August 2012 in Port Louis, Mauritius.

The theme was 'Education in the Commonwealth: bridging the gap as we accelerate towards achieving internationally agreed goals'.

The meeting brought together a diverse range of educational stakeholders, including education ministers, senior officials, and representatives from national and international agencies, academics, teachers, NGOs, youth and the private sector.

Commonwealth ministerial meetings are one of the principal forums for Commonwealth inter-governmental consultation and decision-making. To this end, Commonwealth education ministers meet every three years to discuss issues of mutual concern and interest, to formulate policy on key developmental issues and to build consensus at a high political level within the Commonwealth. As such, the CCEM contributes to broadening the Commonwealth goals of development, democracy and human rights as set out in the Commonwealth Secretariat Strategic Plan.

18CCEM was organised by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, Mauritius, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Other planning partners included the Commonwealth Foundation, the Commonwealth of Learning, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Commonwealth Teachers’ Group, and Nexus Strategic Partnerships Ltd.

The meeting also included the presentation of the Commonwealth Education Good Practice Awards 2012, which recognises exemplary practice in the field of education.
