24 - 25 May 2006: LTT Meeting Facilitating access to long-tem debt finance for SMEs in the Pacific: The Role of the Local Financial Sector and International Financial Institutions, Suva, Fiji
A two-day meeting under the LTT initiative designed to offer the opportunity to participants, which includes domestic commercial banks, development partners and policy-makers, to review and discuss how existing investment instruments and policies could be strengthened to respond more closely to the needs of local entrepreneurs and the local financial sector.
17 - 28 April, 2006: Malta-Commonwealth Third Country Training Programme - Banking and Finance in Small States: Issues and Policies, Valletta, Malta
A workshop organised by the Islands and Small States Institute in collaboration with the Banking and Finance Department of the University of Malta. The workshop is sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation (CFTC) of the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Malta Co-operative Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The workshop will consist mainly of presentations by resource persons on different aspects of the main theme, and country presentations by the participants. These will be followed by a discussion. In addition, there will be field visits to relevant institutions in Malta.
The aim of the workshop is to disseminate knowledge and to provide training on banking and finance, covering a variety of themes with a focus on small states. Also, the workshop aims to enable the participants to benefit from the sharing of ideas and experiences during discussions. The workshop is targeted primarily at officials at senior and middle management levels, operating in the private sector, and public sector institutions nominated by their national governments and sponsored by the CFTC with a small provision made for self-funded participants.
Each participant is expected to present a brief paper about his/her respective country, describing the banking and financial sectors. These presentations will serve as case studies of the characteristics and structures as well as the constraints and opportunities in the respective countries and will provide implications for future policies and strategies.
10 March, 2006: Workshop on Development Implication of International Taxation and AML/CFT Initiatives, Vanuatu
A discussion forum to discuss the preliminary results of "Development Implications of International Taxation and AML/CFT Initiatives" - a study on International Financial Services (IFS) Centres in developing countries. Participants will be able to discuss and evaluate the results obtained, and comment on the conclusions drawn. The survey covers Vanuatu, Barbados and Mauritius. Participants include the surveyed financial intermediaries, service providers and regulators.
21 November 2005: Financing Private Sector Development in the Caribbean: The Role of Local Financial Sector and IFIs, Barbados
The aim of the meeting was to assist in the development and design of a financing facility for the Caribbean region, providing long-term finance for local banks to on-lend for productive investment in the SME sector. Deliberations were also intended to help provide thought leadership on unlocking finance to SMEs in other parts of the Commonwealth.
17 October, 2005: Third Meeting of the Working Party on SME-AFRICA: SME Financing in the SADC Region, South Africa
The meeting brought together leading Domestic Commercial Banks (DCB) and experts on SME financing in the SADC region, together with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to assess how to unlock finance for SMEs in Southern and Eastern Africa (outside of South Africa) and to consider what role the DFI, including the European Investment Bank (EIB) might play in making this happen.
