20-21 March, 2006: Workshop on the WTO and Fisheries, UNCTAD, Geneva, Switzerland
The Commonwealth Secretariat, in co-operation with FAO, UNCTAD, WTO and the ACP, organised a workshop, held at UNCTAD, Geneva. The main objective was to facilitate dialogue on the Impact of WTO Agreements and the current WTO negotiations on the fisheries sector. Participants included representatives of FAO member countries, FAO, OECD, European Commission, UNCTAD, the WTO Appellate Body Secretariat and the ACP Secretariat.
12 – 13 January, 2006: Economic Partnership Agreement Negotiations Pacific ACP and European Union Meeting, Marlborough House, London
An informal dialogue meeting for the Pacific ACP countries and the European Union. Follow-up of the meeting held in early December 2005 in Brussels with the chief EU negotiator. Representatives from both the EU and the Pacific region met with the aim of accelerating the EPA negotiations. Objectives of the informal consultation were to have dialogue on trade issues included in the EPA negotiations. Subject areas included the general approach and planning of the negotiations, architecture, trade in goods and service, investment and fisheries and associated issues relating to regional reparatory task force and funding.
13 – 18 December, 2005: World Trade Organisation Trade Ministerial Conference, Hong Kong
The 6th World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade Ministerial Conference took place in Hong Kong. Commonwealth small states sent a statement to world trade ministers urging reform to the multilateral system. Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas (observer), Barbados, Dominica, Fiji, Guyana, Grenada, Jamaica, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, St. Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent & Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago have pressed for reform on Special and Differential Treatment provisions, and the operationalisation of the principle of 'less than full reciprocity'.
