The Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) was founded in 1983 and is an international professional association of lawyers from throughout the Commonwealth. It exists to maintain and promote the rule of law within the Commonwealth by ensuring that the people of the Commonwealth are served by an independent and efficient legal profession.

Today's Commonwealth is an association of 53 countries. Its nearly 2 billion citizens, about 30 per cent of the world's population, are drawn from the broadest range of faiths, races, cultures and traditions.
The Commonwealth Secretariat, established in 1965, is the main intergovernmental agency of the Commonwealth, facilitating consultation and cooperation among member governments and countries.
