Generation of Leaders Discovered (GoLD) Peer Education: Susannah Farr, Executive Director and Frans Jordaan, Peer Educator (SOUTH AFRICA)
South African youth face a potentially devastating future. Incidence rates among teenagers in South Africa show exponential increases from year to year, suggesting that without dramatic interventions aimed at teenagers over the next three years, half of the youth of South Africa will be infected with HIV/AIDS by 2010.
GoLD Peer Education is a Youth Development model that addresses the behaviours and beliefs that are at the root of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic among young people, while at the same time preparing for the leadership crisis that is being precipitated by the disease. At present GoLD Peer Education is being implemented with GoLD Technical support and training within 150 schools where over 7500 young people are being developed as adolescent peer educators to positively influence their peers and communities.
