Commonwealth Week is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth, which aims to improve the lives of its 2 billion citizens.
‘The Environment – our future’ was the theme for this year’s Commonwealth Week, which took place between 10th and 14th March 2008.
In rising sea levels and expanding deserts, in ravaged rainforests and teeming slums, the world is already experiencing human and environmental degradation, sometimes with catastrophic results.
The Commonwealth is in a position to mobilise a series of networks to take action and respond to areas of concern including deforestation, tourism, fish and seafood farming and increasing urbanisation. Our worldwide network of nearly 90 professional and advocacy organisations which bear the Commonwealth’s name, all work in these and other areas, to protect our environment and our world, which today’s youth will inherit in the future.
